Active contraction of the internal intercostals and abdominal muscles forces air out. Relaxation of the inspiratory muscles allows elastic recoil of the lungs and thoracic wall to decrease thoracic volume. The diaphragm contracts further and pushes upward on the lungs, compressing them. Active contraction of the diaphragm combined with rib elevation forces air out of the lungs.
